Scam Alert: Fake Tolling Messages
Scammers are impersonating MnDOT, E-ZPass, and other tolling agencies by sending fake messages that claim you owe toll fees and direct you to a payment link. These are scams.
What You Need to Know:
- Minnesota E-ZPass (MnDOT) will never text or email you asking for payment or personal information.
- These scams are targeting random phone numbers and email addresses — you do not need to be an E-ZPass user to be contacted.
- There has been no data breach.
What to Do:
- Delete suspicious messages immediately — do not click links or respond
- Do not set up a new or different E-ZPass account because of a scam message.
- If your device allows, report messages as “junk” or “spam.” This helps prevent future scams.
- If you clicked a link or gave out personal information, take steps to secure your financial accounts and personal data.
Scam Letters by Mail:
Scammers may also send fake invoices by mail with questionable URLs and urgent payment demands. Legitimate letters from MnDOT, E-ZPass, or other government agencies will:
- Include official letterhead
- Provide detailed account or billing information
- Offer multiple contact and payment methods
Report Fraud:
If you believe you’ve been targeted:
- Report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)
- Or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
