FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRESS RELEASE: Update to June 2025 Officer Involved Shooting
On June 11, 2025, at approximately 10:28 p.m., Brooklyn Center Police Officers responded to a domestic-related disturbance in the 3200 block of 63rd Avenue North. During the incident, officers encountered a male armed with a chainsaw who advanced toward them and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon. After less-lethal options did not stop his advance, two officers discharged their firearms, striking the male. Officers immediately rendered first aid, and he was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and later released.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is conducting a criminal investigation into the officers’ actions and presented its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office (HCAO), which continues its independent review. Separate criminal investigations were also undertaken by the Bloomington Police Department regarding the actions of the individual who was shot, and by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident involving that individual and his mother.
The City of Brooklyn Center retained an independent investigator to conduct an administrative review to determine whether the officers’ actions complied with Brooklyn Center Police Department policies. That investigation included a review of body-worn and squad camera video, officer statements, and department policies on use of force. The investigator concluded that both officers acted in compliance with department policies regarding their use of deadly force.
An overview of this incident and video excerpts were presented to Brooklyn Center’s Hennepin County Joint Community Police Partnership Multicultural Advisory Committee. This group of community members regularly meets with Brooklyn Center Police Department staff and provides valuable insight that informs and guides department practices. The discussion during this presentation was robust and deeply appreciated.
Chief Flesland reviewed the investigative findings and concurs that the officers did not violate department policies in their use of deadly force. Both officers have been returned to full duty.
The Brooklyn Center Police Department recognizes and supports the ongoing independent criminal investigation being conducted by the BCA and its review by the HCAO, and continues to fully cooperate with all involved agencies. No further information will be released at this time.
The Brooklyn Center Police Department remains committed to transparency and to protecting the vulnerable from harm with professionalism and respect.
