Regulations

The City of Brooklyn Center requires the licensing of Mechanical Contractors as defined in Chapter 23, Section 23-1500 of its Ordinance. The State of Minnesota also requires a $25,000 bond for mechanical contractors.

• No person shall install, alter, reconstruct, or repair any portion of a building mechanical system consisting of heating, ventilating, comfort cooling, or refrigeration equipment, including any gas piping incidental thereto, without first having procured a license from the City of Brooklyn Center. Licenses shall be issued only to individuals or contractors who demonstrate an understanding of the laws and regulations and techniques relating to the installation and maintenance of building mechanical systems. The license period is May 1 through April 30. The annual license fee for a mechanical contractors license is $60.

License Approval

Upon the Community Development Department's receipt of a completed mechanical contractors license application, appropriate license fee, proof of Workers’ Compensation Insurance Coverage form, and Minnesota Business Tax Identification Number form, the license application shall be presented to the City Council for consideration at its next regular meeting. The City Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. License materials must be submitted at least seven (7) days prior to a City Council meeting.

Regulations

The City of Brooklyn Center requires the licensing of sign hangers as defined in Chapter 34, Section 34-160 of its ordinance:

• No person, firm, or corporation shall engage in the business of erecting, altering, extending, repairing, or maintaining signs or sign structures within the City of Brooklyn Center without first having procured a license therefore except that the owner, lessee, or occupant of the property upon which the sign is located may perform the actual work himself provided he has acquired a permit for the sign. The license period is May 1 through April 30.

Regulations

The City of Brooklyn Center requires a copy of the State Master Plumber’s license and $25,000 code compliance bond to be on file with the City prior to the issuance of plumbing permits. It is the responsibility of the contractor to call for inspections (763-569-3344). 24 hour notice is required. EMERGENCY repairs may be done prior to obtaining a permit provided a permit is pulled within 48 hours.

(Per Minnesota Statutes, Section 326.40, Subd. 2 Plumbers must be licensed by the State Commissioner of Health in any city with a population of more than 5,000 before engaging in the business of installing plumbing. No person or firm shall engage in plumbing installation unless a licensed master plumber is in charge of the work at all times.)
