Am I allowed to have facial hair?

Employees are allowed to have facial hair under the following conditions:
• Mustaches must be short and trimmed and not to exceed below the corners of the mouth.
• Goatees shall be worn with a mustache with the jaw and neck line cleanly shaven.
• Beards must be worn with a mustache, must not be longer than ½ inch and must even and not patchy.
• Sideburns must not extend below the bottom of the ear.

Employees may be required to shave for special events or while in Class “A” uniform.
Am I required to pay for my uniforms and equipment?

No; regardless of the position within the department you apply for all uniforms and equipment will be paid for by the City.
Can I have a second job?

All Brooklyn Center Police Department employees are required to fill out an outside employment form to be approved by the Chief of Police. Candidates who currently have other jobs prior to employment with the City of Brooklyn Center should disclose this during the hiring process.
Can I have tattoos?

Employees may have visible tattoos so long as they are not deemed offensive. Offensive tattoos may include; images that depict racial, sexual, discriminatory, obscene or gang related images/language.
Do I need to be a Brooklyn Center resident to apply?

No; however, all applicants selected for hire will be eligible for a one-time $1,000 hiring bonus if they live within the City of Brooklyn center at the time of appointment.
How do I complete a ride-along?

Please complete and submit ride-along request forms to joinbcpd@brooklyncentermn.gov.
Is there a drug test?

Applicants who move on to the medical evaluation phase will be required to submit to a drug test as part of the evaluation.

• All applicants applying for police officer and CSO positions will be required to work all of the above depending on their schedule assignments.
• Applicants applying for the Records Technician position will work a daytime Monday through Friday work schedule with holidays off.

Police Officers benefits are negotiated through their representation, Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) Local 82.

Police Officer applicants who are considered a lateral hire will have their prior sworn law enforcement service credited towards the Union pay scale according to the respective union contract.

Lateral Candidates: Lateral candidates will receive a $10,000 hiring incentive, paid in two installments: $5,000 upon hiring and $5,000 after successful completion of field training.

Wage information:

Entry level patrol officers: $35.03 - $59.01 per hour with the option for education incentive pay after one year of service.
Lateral patrol officers: $40.69 - $59.01.

Effective January 1, 2026:

Starting wage with 3 years is $8,930/month
Starting wage with 2 years is $7,680/month
Starting wage with 1 year is $7,054/month

Longevity steps:

After 5 years of service, add 2%
After 8 years of service, add 3%
After 12 years of service, add 5%
After 16 years of service, add 7%
After 20 years of service, add 9%
After 25 years of service, add 11%

Add 3% for a bachelor degree or 4% for a masters degree until longevity is reached.

Law Enforcement Labor Services "LELS" Local Number 82 Labor Contract

Records Technician

The benefits available to our non-licensed professional law enforcement staff, including our crime analyst, crime prevention specialist, administrative assistant, property technician, records specialist and records technicians are negotiated through their representation, Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) Local 512.

Newly hired records technicians will be paid the base rate according to the LELS Local 512 Union Contract.
