Project Updates

As part of the construction of the City's new well, crews will be using small, carefully controlled explosive charges to help improve water flow from the well. These charges will be detonated 300 feet underground, at the bottom of the well. The first detonation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18th. It is expected there will be multiple detonations performed throughout the day, approximately once per hour. No detentions will be performed after 6 pm in the evening. If necessary, detonations may also be performed on Wednesday, August 19th and Thursday, August 20th. Detonations will also take place on Friday, August 28th between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. 

Residents in the area may hear brief noises or feel minor vibrations during this process. It is also possible animals may react to the detonations, or act outside of their usual behavior. This is a safe and commonly used method in well development that helps increase the well's efficiency and long-term performance. 

City staff along with engineers and contractors will be overseeing the process to ensure it follows proper safety procedures. Brooklyn Center Police and Fire Department have reviewed and are aware of the detonation plans.

Project Details

In early 2023, during regularly scheduled maintenance, the City discovered the well casing in Well No. 7 was failing, and the well could no longer be used. Because Well No. 7 was one of the City's highest-producing wells, replacing it was critical to maintaining a reliable drinking water supply for residents and businesses. City staff acted quickly upon discovery of the problem to replace the failing well. 

Public Works added the replacement project to the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) in late 2023, and the City Council approved the project in December 2023. Preliminary and final design began shortly after, and the project was publicly bid in early 2025. 

The new water supply well is located near the edge of Evergreen Park. Construction began in May 2025, with the demolition of the failing well and well house.  The new well is expected to be fully online by December 2026. This new well will strengthen the City's water system, improve reliability during high-demand periods, provide additional capacity for future growth, and help ensure a dependable supply of high-quality drinking water for years to come.
